Artist Statement
Winter Light

Winter can be a difficult time.  The materials used in my pieces reflect that.  The eucalyptus leaves used to dye cotton gauze had already been used once to dye and they don’t really like to work on cotton.  The palette they create with iron captures the subtlety of the winter light.  The silk and cotton gauze used to make Shelter and the lamps are very fragile and easy to tear or snag.  This quality also allows the materials to be translucent and transmit light like an overcast day. Shelter is suspended from a single point, very susceptible to its environment. The indigo dyed Shibori velvet reflects a different part of winter light.  The cold crystalline clear light when it feels like you can see every ice crystal. The choice of velvet contradicts this due to its fuzzy/blurry nature. All the pieces I’ve created serve as gathering points, a home, a beckoning light and soft warmth.
